Frances Buontempo is currently editor of the ACCU’s Overload magazine and has written a book on Genetic Algorithms and Machine Learning and a book to help you (re)learn C++. She has worked as a programmer at various companies, mostly in London with a focus on finance. She enjoys testing and deleting code and tries to keep on learning.
Periodically we are told machines in general and AI in particular can replace humans. Advances in large language models have stirred up the conversation and it's time to re-ask if AI can replace programmers. We'll have to step back and try to define a few terms, like "programmer" and "intelligence". We might not end up with clear answers, but we will have lots to think about.
